UNCCD Regional Workshop on National Action Programmes (7 - 10 June 2010, Prague)

In 2008, the Ministry of the Environment of the Czech Republic together with the Secretariat of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) and the Global Mechanism launched a regional initiative on financial resource mobilization to strengthen the implementation of the Convention in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). As a final step of this initiative, a workshop was held in Prague from 7th until 10th June 2010, which addressed the issue of alignment of national action programmes (NAPs) for implementation of the Convention with the 10-Year Strategy of the UNCCD (2008-2018) together with examining the options for resource mobilization.

Delegates from 11 countries of the Central and Eastern European region participated in the workshop and discussed their current stages of NAP preparation and the necessary steps for their alignment with the Strategy. They also defined their further actions towards finalizing and aligning their NAPs, in which they were supported and advised by representatives of the UNCCD Secretariat and the Global Mechanism. Representatives of the Secretariat of the Global Environment Facility, the European Commission and the Czech Development Agency provided practical information on options for securing external financial resources and offered advice on procedures towards successful project proposals.

As a main outcome of the workshop the participating countries of the CEE region adopted a Resolution (PDF, 46 kB ) in which they, among other things, committed themselves to strengthen the efforts in the NAP alignment process and to align at least 2 NAPs of countries of the region in the biennium 2010 – 2011. On the last day of the workshop the participants were taken on a fieldtrip to the Western Bohemia to view an example of reclamation of soil degraded by coal mining industry in the Sokolov coalfield.
