Rotterdam Convention on the Prior Informed Consent Procedure for Certain Hazardous Chemicals and Pesticides in International Trade

Rotterdam Convention on the Prior Informed Consent Procedure for Certain Hazardous Chemicals and Pesticides in International Trade, Rotterdam, 1998

The objective of the Rotterdam Convention (1998) is the protection of the environment and thus human health against detrimental effects of hazardous chemicals. The Convention enables to control the movement of selected hazardous chemicals and curb unwanted import of these substances which include industrial chemicals and pesticides.

For each substance listed there is an evaluation document elaborated which sums up its dangerousness and reasons for its use restrictions. The Convention thus enables the Parties to be given information in order to be able to decide on and control the import or export of the given substance to their territory.
