The Deputy Minister of Environment V. Smrž participated at the UN Summit on the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). On behalf of the Minister, V. Smrž delivered a speech in the thematic bloc concerning climate change. He emphasized the role of national policies in the fight against climate change and underscored the significance of cross-sectoral cooperation.
At the UN Summit the formulation proces of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable development was completed. The 2030 Agenda rests on the balance between economy, social dimension and the quality of the environment. The final outcome contains 17 Goals and 169 targets which stipulate the main principles for national and international implementation.
Ministry of the Environment, through national and EU coordinating mechanisms, took active part in the whole negotiation process. It will implement the adopted agend through its main strategic documents regarding climate change and sustainable use of natural resources. The Ministry will also make sure the outcome of the UN Summit finds its way into the main national document concerning sustainable development. The main national body will be the Government Council for Sustainable Development. Minister Brabec will take active part – as the Deputy Chairperson of the Council – in the process of the Strategic Framework for Sustainable Development update. The Ministry will implement the 2030 Agenda also in its robust international cooperation.
The main priority will be the formulation of ambitious national goals covering all 3 dimensions of development but also establishing functional monitoring and review mechanism. The implementation of the SDGs has to proceed on the national, regional and global level and last but not least, must be understandable for wider public.
