The Czech-Swedish workshop focused on the waste management was held in the Ministry of the Environment

The Czech-Swedish workshop focusing in the waste management that linked to the long-term cooperation of the Czech Republic and Sweden in this area and to the recent journey of representatives of the Ministry of the Environment to Sweden was held in the Ministry of the Environment. The workshop brought together the representatives of private sector, state institutions, municipalities and various interest associations. They were acquainted with Swedish as well as Czech experience in the practice and discussed the specific problems encountered in villages and cities.

The Deputy Minister of the environment Vladislav Smrž and the Ambassador of Sweden Viktoria Li opened the workshop. The detailed information concerning the approach of Sweden to the municipal waste management, from the level of the Swedish Agency for the environment up to the specific experience of municipal waste management systems were presented in the workshop.

Today Sweden reaches very good results in the are of municipal waste recycling (50%) and has limited its landfill at less than 1%. It uses a significant portion of produced municipal waste in energetic way according to the European waste management hierarchy.

The representatives of the Ministry of the Environment presented the current situation of the waste management in the Czech Republic, including the preparation of the new act on waste that shall be finalised together with the new act on the end-of-life products after being consulted at the Governmental Legislative Council so that it can be discussed by a new Government formed following the autumn´s elections to the Chamber of deputies. The priority of the Czech Republic consists in the significant reduction in land-filling of municipal waste, in the improvement of waste creation prevention and in the increased volume of its recycling. Other presentations were focused on the experience with the introduction of PAYT system [1] in Czech towns and cities that will be object of practical workshops held by the Ministry of the Environment [2] for mayors of towns and cities and they shall include also the modern systems of waste monitoring in towns and villages.

Within this week the Ministry of the Environment and the Swedish Embassy organised several events specialised in the waste theme, in the Agenda 2030 and the Industry 4.0. that attracted the interest of the public.
