Czech Republic handed over the presidency of the International Commission for the Protection of the Danube
On January 23, 2017 the official handover of the presidency of the International Commission for the Protection of the Danube River (hereinafter the "ICPDR") to the European Union took place at the Czech Embassy in Vienna. ICPDR President 2017 Mr. Peter Gammeltoft took over a symbolic bottle of Danube water from the outgoing Czech president Mr. Peter J. Kalaš, in the presence of representatives of the Secretariat of the ICPDR, Czech and EU ICPDR delegations and the Ambassador of the Czech Republic in Austria.
In his speech, Peter J. Kalaš presented among other things the success stories of the Czech Presidency. The Czech Republic built on the work of the previous presidencies and supported the implementation of the International Danube River Basin Management Plan and Flood Risk Management Plan, was active in the area of floods and droughts, and last but not least actively strived to strengthen existing cooperation in the region, both between countries as well as other initiatives active in and outside of the region, including in particular the EU macro-regional strategy for the Danube Region, FAO, World Business Council for sustainable development and Green Climate Fund.
Noteworthy events during the Czech presidency were the Ministerial Conference, taking place on February 9, 2016 in Vienna with the participation of the Czech and Austrian Minister for Environment and ICPDR Standing Working Group Meeting in June in the village Modrá.
