The rapid growth in economic activity is accompanied by increasing emissions of greenhouse gases. According to the latest IPCC report, greenhouse gas emissions produced by human activity have a considerable effect on the planet’s climate. The current trend in environmental policy is to achieve an emission reduction in the most efficient way. A shift from administrative instruments (rules, bans, limits, etc.) towards economic instruments (emission trading, environmental taxation) is therefore occurring.
