United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification

United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification in those Countries Experiencing Serious Drought and/or Desertification, particularly in Africa (1994)

Recognizing the need for a fresh approach, 193 governments had joined the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification in 1994. This Convention aims to promote effective action through innovative local programmes and supportive international partnerships.

Land degradation and desertification is a key factor affecting development in many countries and poses a threat to progress in sustainable development and the eradication of poverty and hunger.

Combating desertification is essential to ensuring the long-term productivity of inhabited drylands. Unfortunately, past efforts have too often failed, and around the world the problem of land degradation continues to worsen.

Czech Republic ratified the Convention on 24 June 2000 (Nr. 53/2002 Coll.)
